The Flat Circle

A smart man once said; ‘Time is a Flat Circle’. Not to get philosophical, but we think  that theory also applies to fashion. There’s a concept known as the “Fashion Trend Cycle”, the idea that  trends from a few decades ago will cycle back and become popular again. Some call this the “20 Year Rule”, while others swear that it’s 30 years not 20.

Here at Maceoo, we’re not experts on fashion philosophy, we just make incredible designer clothes, but maybe that’s enough credibility to offer an opinion. Personally, we think the 20/30 year theory holds water. We’re seeing more denim than ever before, trucker hats are making a comeback, so are wide leg pants, etc and etc.

Depending on which fashion forward Plato you talk to, this puts the 90’s and early 2000’s in the spotlight. This can be horrifying, especially if you fire up your old digital camera and browse through ancient pics of you and your friends hanging out. There is a silver lining, as with most things, and it exists in our ability to learn from our mistakes. When a trend circles back and rears its forgotten head, fashion forward folks have an opportunity to repurpose old trends to make sense of it with current sensibilities in mind. Consider that the next time you’re trying to relive the millennium by buying a baggy, oversized shirt. Instead consider something like a more sensible dress shirt paired with light colored denim which keeps the spirit of that era alive without making you look like a cartoon character.

Why does this fashion time warp happen? It’s simple, when the current trend hits a dead end, either due to over exposure or exhaustion, designers start looking through the archives for fresh inspiration. It’s not a new concept, in the early 2000’s fashion took a brief obsession with 80’s and 70’s trends. You could even look to other iconic trends and see inspirations from past decades. A good example of that is the flashy Saturday Night Fever-esque suits of the 70’s that wouldn’t have existed without the iconic zoot suits of the 40’s and 50’s.

If you’re looking for a responsible approach to the fashion cycle, consider grabbing our classic grey jeans with our bold LS TieDye shirt, and pairing it with a mesh trucker hat for a nostalgic early 2000’s look.

Balzers were also an important staple of 90’s and 2000’s fashion, and at Maceoo we pride ourselves on offering quality and designer blazers and suits that will last you a lifetime. Let’s not forget about leather jackets either, they will kill two birds with stone by keeping you up to date with current trends and offering you a timeless look.
